Bonnie and I have been to Ron’s many times during its 29 years in Exton, Pa.
We would normally drop in for a drink(s) and a sandwich. The food and service have historically been pretty good at Ron’s.
Ron’s Bar
The bar at Ron’s is very well stocked. Two bartenders were on duty on the night we had dinner there. The bar service was very good and the drinks reasonably priced.
Aside from adequate seating at the bar, there are several tables set up in the bar area where guests can also dine.
The Main Course(s)
Ron’s menu is very extensive (It seems like Ron’s menu is about 15 pages long), and dishes range from pub food to specialty dinners. Dinners have both an Italian and American flavor, with several pasta and classic steak entrees being offered. Seafood and chicken dishes are also offered.
We skipped appetizers on this visit. But Ron’s appetizer listing is also fairly extensive.
We began with a garden salad and a bleu cheese dressing. The salads were fairly typical of pub fare, but the bleu cheese was exceptionally thick. (A little bigger serving of the dressing wouldn’t have hurt).
Bonnie selected the shrimp scampi and I the spicy shrimp and sausage.
The presentation of the dishes was again fairly typical of pub food. And just a note on the service. Although our server, Mike, was fairly efficient, I couldn’t help but think that he was on duty because he had to be.
Bonnie’s shrimp scampi was very good. The linguine was cooked al dente and the dish populated with shrimp and scallops. The dish was served in a blush sauce and well seasoned.
My spicy shrimp and sausage was a bit bland. I thought the dish could have been a bit spicier, and I had to add a lot of red pepper to enhance the flavor. The penne pasta was cooked al dente and the shrimp firm. The sausage was cut in the form of coins which I thought diminished the flavor. I think I would have rather had a different form of sausage and maybe a different choice of pasta(linguini?)The dish was served with a tomato sauce which I thought was also a bit bland.
The serving sizes were adequate.
We ordered garlic bread with our meals. The garlic bread was stale.
Dessert
For dessert, Bonnie had the peanut butter explosion and I the cheesecake. Bonnie’s was rich and tasty (I had some), but my cheesecake was dry, flat and a bit stale.
After Dinner Drinks
I think I should have had Bonnie’s dinner. Her’s was much better than mine. And, although Bonnie’s meal was good, we both couldn’t help thinking that Ron’s had lost a step in both quality and service.
Sorry Ron- but I think it will be a while before we schedule a return visit.
